Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer National Park

Super, non ? On s'y croirait.

Great, isn't it? You'd think you are there. A vending machine with a touristic theme, on site. On your way to the restroom, this scene is almost absurb.

One of the things that I find very surprising about American people, is patriotism. Up to a point that I also find French non-patriotism quite weird. Imagine for a second that we decide to sculpt huge statues of Chirac, Mitterand, Giscard d'Estaing and De Gaulle in Auvergne (sorry it's all very French)... Ok, they are too recent, but honnestly, that's kind of a peculiar idea when you think about it.

Moreover, they make you freak out on the way to Mount Rushmore with signs that say "experience patriotism, a change in your life". Considering the fact that, as a French person, you are already shocked by the American flag's omnipresence, you really get to the point where you wonder about qualities and imperfections of patriotism.

I'll spare you my thoughts on that issue that started ever since I got here, but there is one sure thing: patriots or not, French people always think they are slightly better that anyone else (I told them not to deny, in the French version). American people admire or hate them (because they are jealous), but they know that they love their country and that it's not a few millions of dirty people (I know about that reputation) that are going to tell them what to do. There is something beautiful about loving your country and being proud of it, but with my French formatted brain, I just can't get into that concept.

Above: the world's biggest monument, a statue of the great Indian leader, Crazy Horse. He to give up his land and was therefore murdered. Big touristic swindle, I must say, knowing that the statue is far from being done and that the museum is more about the family working on that sculpture rather than about Native Americans. You'll discover all about how great they are because they want to emphasize on the former inhabitants of the region. Promoted as one of the biggest museums about Native Americans in the US, I find it quite worrying regarding the valorization of their culture... This family refuses to get any help from the State, because they want to keep on working individually and take care of it themselves, without having to beg and expect money from anyone as well as being controlled by another entity. I like to think that maybe the State would have created a dignifying museum for the Sioux people, if it was financing that sculpture that started decades ago.

Ci-dessous: Custer National Park.

Below: Custer National Park. I dwelled on the legitimacy of these sculptures, but know that THE highlight of the day is that. This country is wonderful and I can't get over it. I humbly bow to the beauty of such landscapes. I can't say anything anymore. Yet, I do have a lot more to say, including the fact that we saw some buffalos and some does running free, as well as we discovered some prairie dogs that look like white moles and other animals that I had never seen before and who just live there, as if they were normal although they are incredible!!! I am probably not enough of a good photographer to honour these landscapes but the latter do deserve more than such a document.

No comment on Poumbo the car. It's worrying me with its smoke coming out of the hood.

South Dakota rocks

Ok, when I was telling you about how stunning landscapes in Minnesota are, I had no idea what I was talking about. Indeed, since then, we have crossed South Dakota and that is more beautiful than anything! This is the State of the great prairies and as a matter of fact, prairies we surrounding us as far as the eye could see.

We stopped there (White Lake) for our lunch break: a real one street town that seems to host cowboys and a real pub/diner with $3.50 cheeseburgers and two old men that never looked away from their jackpot machine for even a second.

And then, just before getting to Rapid City (next to Mount Rushmore), we crossed the way of the Badlands Natural Park and followed that detour -breath taking.

Poumbo is holding on, leaking and smoking, as usual, and always a bit more. It's scarying us a bit, but we have put things into perspective, remembering that the mechanic told us there was no risk of explosion. Hoping that it will last until LA according to our updated itinerary below... (we're at F)

Worthington, Minnesota

We didn't make it to Sioux Falls today so we are staying close to Sioux Ville, in Worthington. Antoine refused to sleep in a shady motel that looked like one in which we would get killed in if we were in a movie. Hence, we renewed the Super 8 experience, safe bet and affordable. According to the price, you can tell if you are in a more or less lost area. Worthington seems really lost, then. Super 8 is changing its logo and I think that modernization is a real mistake! I am considering starting a petition just like the one I did for the return of the less ugly kid from Kinder Chocolate. (yes I keep myself busy with great useful projects)

Poumbo seeemed too tired for the day, and I've got to admit that it's making our trip full or suprises, as we never know if it's going to hold the next day (it leaks and smokes). Please, Poumbo, just make an effort for another 5000 kilometers...

After this whole day driving through Wisconsin and Minnesota, our adventures in Chicago already sound far and we will have forgotten soon enough that Antoine's chips were stolen by a homeless man and that we found the cap of the gas tank on the roof of the car before leaving the city. I'm not even telling you about the cap of the oil bottle that got stuck in the hood of the car and that we had to make tools in order to get it out... I think our trip would not even be plausible in a burlesque movie, as we are going from absurd situation to another one.

We went through a big storm that led to an incredibly beautiful light. I am lacking words to describe how we were overwhelmed by the beauty of such a desolate and yet rich landscape. These fields filling the landscape as far as the eye can see made the appearance of a hangar seem like a heartening punctuation. (that was my "emotional" sequence).

Hum...

Cups are made out of styrofoam, a Jeep looks tiny, we get two plastic bags inside another at the supermarket, well we know it: American people pollute. However, they do have wind energy! With Barack Obama and wind energy in Minnesota, American people are more than ready to forget the "European people have more modern habits" myth. I am so glad we still have the French New Wave to pretend we are cultivated. Hum...

Objectif de demain : le Mont Rushmore !

Tomorrow's aim: Mount Rushmore!

Strong storm alert

Antoine tient à rebaptiser notre Boumbo "Poumbo".

We are stuck in a gas station, somewhere in Minnesota, I don't precisely know where but under a heavy rain, that's for sure!

I am trying to be super geeky and post from my iPhone, while waiting.

Antoine insists on calling Boumbo "Poumbo". Poumbo is fine but freaks us out every couple hours. We keep believing that it's doing weird noises, although they all seem to come from the road. Nevertheless, the oil is leaking slowly but surely and we are pouring oil regularly.

I drank too much coffee for today, so I hope to stop shaking by the end of that thunder storm.

We crossed the Mississippi river and it was amazing! (real non iPhone pictures to come)

All that jazz

The architecture of Chicago is amazing! These American cities are really audacious, when it comes to business areas. For those who know Paris, imagine La Défense next to the Tuileries, and that's beautiful!

We took an architectural cruise that was beautiful, but the guide seemed to believe that she should sound particularly enthusiastic about her topic in order to entertain us, as if it weren't interesting enough like that. I had an infantilizing feeling, all along. Weird. What a beauty, I can't add anything, it was almost overwhelming.

Play Time de Jacques Tati !!!

Oh yeah, so we are staying in a plaza hotel that is expensive but not that expensive. Can that be due to... a workers' strike? French people and strike work like a magnet together! It was almost moving to see these 10 people walking in round in front of the entrance with their "on strike" sign (just like in a movie!). We immediately thought that they should just block the access to the building if they want more efficiency! The hotel has a ghost flair but it's still working... I send all my support to the French strikers and demonstrators right now and I consider starting a "demonstration consulting agency".

We went to the Art Institute, that owns the second collection of impressionist paintings in the world. It is, indeed, impressive, but after spending 3 months in a museum with white walls and where everything is more than beautiful, the galleries always seem a bit too dark elsewhere.
The modern wing will open this Saturday! Damnit, I was so close.

As good tourists in Chicago, we went to see a jazz concert, where (so says the legend) Al Capone used to hang out, back in the days. I don't know much about jazz music, but the drummer really made us completely silent and still during his incredible 10 minutes solo. I can feel that I don't get much about this music, when I see the musicians looking extremely content about a few sounds that I don't even notice, but they did make me shiver!

Meet Antoine Capone... Hum.

We used the train to move around the city and it's cleaner than the New York subway, but I did happen to have a neighbor smoking crack behind me there. Is that touristic bad luck or is that common here? I am missing a Chicagoan to answer that.

And, speaking of transportation, I can update you regarding Boumbo. The oil leak is due to the main seal that needs to be changed, but since it's pretty complicated to access it, it would be too expensive to fix it. The mechanic said that we should be fine if we regularly checked the oil level and kept a few oil bottles in the car to refill the container, so we should be able to get to L.A. We'll drive away from Chicago and towards the Mont Rushmore tomorrow night and should get there within 3 days...

Chicago, Illinois

Still no auto repair shop open... We are a bit worried, but will enjoy the city for the day! Also, after having had 2 queen beds per room, we discovered what a king size bed is. Crazy!

We did think that a garage opening at 7am on a Sunday was crazy. It was a lie!
So, whatever, we are going to Chicago and finally booked a hotel on Michigan Avenue that is expensive enough for us not to want to pay the extra cost of internet. We are still not sure whether we should look for another garage mechanic there or not, but we are still happy!
Chicago, here we come!

Welcome to... Mishawaka, Indiana

Will we ever get to Chicago? We were almost about to get there by tonight...

We left early this morning and had a peaceful, efficient drive all day long. The only thing that did make us less talkative was the weird behavior of the car, such as the impression of smoking that we had, or the tractor sound that it began to make as we were at the paytoll leaving Ohio and then the leak that was confirmed somewhere in Indiana.

Around 6pm, as we were growingly panicking about the leak, a young man from a gas station advised us to get out at the next exit, in Mishawaka, where we'd find a Wal Mart and probably a mechanical garage that would still be open (for a few minutes, I enjoyed the greatness of capitalism and the idea of 24 hours stores). As we arrived in this (huge, american huge) shopping area, we found something that looked like a used cars dealer and mechanical garage... already closed (communists!). I found a seller who was on his way out, so I ran after him beggin him to help us (and scared him - I wonder if he thought I was going to use a weapon to attack him, considering how I would probably think of it if I were to stay here for a longer while). He told us the garage was to reopen tomorrow at 7am and looked at our car, noticing that the oil container was empty -it was checked before we left, by our car dealer. He gave us his card with his cellphone # saying "if there's anything, just give me a call" and showed us the cheapest motel (right behind). American people can be so friendly, I'm still amazed by that. Then he told us to buy 4 bottles of engine oil (Antoine, car expert -ahem, thought he was crazy to make us buy so many bottles) and that it would last until tomorrow morning.

Impressionant.

We strolled out for a bit in Wal Mart and I finally understood why, when I thought I knew about "real America" after spending some time in Rhode Island, I'd be told that I didn't know what I was talking about. Everything is huge and I am thin here! Antoine looks like a feather next to these huge inhabitants of Mishawaka. Imposing.

Otherwise, the neighborhood is very nice and practical: a lake surrounded by apartment houses and an ATM right next to it. Never forget nor waste time with your priorities!

Questions of the day:
- What will happen with the car?
- How much time and money will that cost?
- Where will we sleep tomorrow night if we get to Chicago? (everything seems full)
- How can we listen to some music with a radio/tape player that doesn't work?

Pennsylvania is huge!

Foreword: I am making my blog bilingual, responding to several requests and unable to make the switch, knowing that my French crew would stop making the effort to read it and my grand parents would probably be offended by such a betrayal. I feel a bit ridiculous and non spontaneous but I will do my best and hope to satisfy everyone! Please forgive me for the mistakes that I might make.

We have arrived, safe and sound... somewhere in Pennsylvania. Ah, in Brookville (thank you iPhone). There isn't much to say about it, we just crashed in a Super 8 Motel, attracted by the cinematographic aspect of the chain.

This first day was long and full of emotions, although we are not even closer to Chicago than NY! It's so hard to get out of the city and then we had to pump the tires (different system than the French one, first culture choc after a few miles) and then we "had to" get lost once or twice, have a few breaks and last but not least: I received an email from my insurance telling me that something was wrong and that my policy wasn't confirmed - just as we were stopping in a gas station after 6 hours of drive in the middle of nowhere. Instantaneous frightening effect, I am sure I would be less scared of a psychopath knocking on my car window while nappping... Anyway, it's all supposed to be fine now, so let's keep our fingers crossed!

The car is fine too, look at it, so happy to get a picnic in the nature. It stopped leaning diagonally when we pumped the tires -hurray! (note that this car that I thought as being as huge as a tank looks like a VW Golf in the middle of this bulldozer-cars on the roads and these trucks who keep passing us!)

As for my co-pilot, he shows empathy and goodwill. My stress is his stress: what a friend! Not a complaint, not even after the 20th time where I asked for some water or almonds.

Bilan :

Report:
- Our tape player doesn't work and this is a major issue.
- Pennsylvania is wonderful but I wonder when it will end!
- We are only 5 hours away from NYC and every mile seems like a discovery. I feel like Borat, not to mention Antoine who believes that people hate him when they don't want to chat with him, like the cashier from the gas station.

Etape 1 - New York, NY
