All that jazz

L'architecture de Chicago est renversante ! Vraiment, ces villes américaines ont une audace impressionnante en matière de quartiers d'affaires. Imaginez La Défense près des Tuileries, et c'est beau !

The architecture of Chicago is amazing! These American cities are really audacious, when it comes to business areas. For those who know Paris, imagine La Défense next to the Tuileries, and that's beautiful!


Nous avons fait une ballade architecturale en bâteau, très belle, mais avec une guide qui semblait penser qu'il fallait avoir l'air particulièrement enthousiasmée par ce qu'elle racontait pour captiver notre attention. Du coup, j'avais une impression plutôt infantilisante. Bizarre.
Mais quelle beauté, je n'ai rien à ajouter, c'en était submergeant.

We took an architectural cruise that was beautiful, but the guide seemed to believe that she should sound particularly enthusiastic about her topic in order to entertain us, as if it weren't interesting enough like that. I had an infantilizing feeling, all along. Weird. What a beauty, I can't add anything, it was almost overwhelming.

Ah oui, donc nous sommes dans un hôtel plaza qui est cher mais quand même pas hors de prix. Serait parce que... les employés sont en grève ? Les français sont un aimant à grève et c'était presque émouvant de voir ces 10 personnes marcher (comme dans les films !) avec leur panneau "en grève" marcher en rond devant l'entrée.
Immédiatement, nous nous sommes fait la réflexion qu'ils devraient bloquer l'accès à l'hôtel pour plus d'efficacité ! L'hôtel est fantôme, mais il fonctionne toujours... Enfin, j'envoie tout mon soutien aux grevistes et manifestants français du moment et je réflechis à monter une boîte de "consulting de manifestation".

Oh yeah, so we are staying in a plaza hotel that is expensive but not that expensive. Can that be due to... a workers' strike? French people and strike work like a magnet together! It was almost moving to see these 10 people walking in round in front of the entrance with their "on strike" sign (just like in a movie!). We immediately thought that they should just block the access to the building if they want more efficiency! The hotel has a ghost flair but it's still working... I send all my support to the French strikers and demonstrators right now and I consider starting a "demonstration consulting agency".



Nous avons fait un tour à l'Institut d'Art, qui a la deuxième collection mondiale de peinture impressioniste. C'est effectivement très beau, mais après avoir passé 3 mois dans un musée aux murs blancs où tout est plus que beau, les galeries me paraissent toujours un peu trop sombres ailleurs.
L'aile moderne n'ouvre que samedi ! Damnit, j'y étais presque.

We went to the Art Institute, that owns the second collection of impressionist paintings in the world. It is, indeed, impressive, but after spending 3 months in a museum with white walls and where everything is more than beautiful, the galleries always seem a bit too dark elsewhere.
The modern wing will open this Saturday! Damnit, I was so close.

En bons touristes de Chicago, nous avons vu un concert de jazz, là où Al Capone aurait traîné, back in the days. Je n'y connais pas grand chose, mais le batteur nous a tous tenus en haleine pendant un solo d'une dizaine de minutes, grandiose. Je sens bien que le jazz m'échappe un peu, je les vois faire des mimiques d'approbation et de grand contentement quand je ne vois aucune différence avec la minute d'avant, mais ces musiciens m'ont faite frissonner !

As good tourists in Chicago, we went to see a jazz concert, where (so says the legend) Al Capone used to hang out, back in the days. I don't know much about jazz music, but the drummer really made us completely silent and still during his incredible 10 minutes solo. I can feel that I don't get much about this music, when I see the musicians looking extremely content about a few sounds that I don't even notice, but they did make me shiver!

On s'est promené en métro, plus propre qu'à New York, mais j'ai tout de même eu droit à un voisin derrière moi fumant du crack. Est-ce la malchance touristique ou juste un événement banal ? Il me manque un Chicagoan pour me répondre.

Et puisque je parle de transports, je peux vous donner des nouvelles de Bumbo l'automobile. Elle a donc une fuite et il faut changer le "main seal" qui se trouve loin dans le capot donc il faudrait tout démonter, ce qui nous coûterait trop cher. Le garagiste nous a dit qu'en gardant quelques bouteilles d'huile à nos côtés, on devrait pouvoir rouler jusqu'à Los Angeles. Alors nous prendrons la route demain soir, direction le Mont Rushmore où nous devrions arriver dans 3 jours...

We used the train to move around the city and it's cleaner than the New York subway, but I did happen to have a neighbor smoking crack behind me there. Is that touristic bad luck or is that common here? I am missing a Chicagoan to answer that.

And, speaking of transportation, I can update you regarding Boumbo. The oil leak is due to the main seal that needs to be changed, but since it's pretty complicated to access it, it would be too expensive to fix it. The mechanic said that we should be fine if we regularly checked the oil level and kept a few oil bottles in the car to refill the container, so we should be able to get to L.A. We'll drive away from Chicago and towards the Mont Rushmore tomorrow night and should get there within 3 days...
